MATILDA BOOKSHOP REVIEW

This story deals with big life change and upheaval, lost memories, and fraught families. Set in England immediately post World War I, the narrative centres on a spirited but sometimes worrisome young girl, Natty, who has to move suddenly due to her mother’s activist tendencies. Natty is distraught when she finds herself sharing a bedroom with her chatterbox cousin Nerys but finds solace in chats with her cousin Huw, who is experiencing PTSD and attempting to process his losses through art. In her spare time Natty plays with a local soldier, Johnny, who has lost his memories of home and identity. Our clever book club kids described the book as ‘twisty-turny', layered, unexpected, mysterious’. One member described how they were on the edge of their seat while reading and we all agreed - this is one heartwarming historical mystery. Marina
