This celebration of iconic images of British pop stars presents a survey of the history of modern music. Starting with the 18-year-old Cliff Richard in 1958, the book consists of 50 photographs covering major stars who topped the charts in each successive decade. The formative, first decade features solo artists such as Billy Fury, Adam Faith, Helen Shapiro, Dusty Springfield and Sandie Shaw and groups including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who - the models for pop icons. The 1970s include glam rock figures such as David Bowie and Queen by Mick Rock, Elton John by Terry O'Neill and Rod Stewart by Brian Aris; followed by the explosion of punk in the form of The Sex Pistols, The Clash and Siouxsie and the Banshees. The triumphant pop decade of the 1980s is represented by New Romantic groups lead by Duran Duran, Culture Club and Adam and the Ants. Other pop sensations of this era include the Human League, Bananarama, Wham! and the Pet Shop Boys. Finally, the last decade of the century brings The Stone Roses, Blur, Pulp and Oasis, followed by a study of The Spice Girls. The book concludes with the current king and queen of pop - Robbie Williams and Cerys from Catatonia.
