Today the water is so clear between Birsay and the mainland even at flood tide we can see the connecting causeway underneath, Our race is not yet run My love who can say we may not yet know better days? Later The Day is a book of elegies and gratitudes. Lyrical yet plain, these poems of praises and pains are grounded in Assynt, Auckland, Glasgow and Edinburgh, and above all amid the big sky and bare, fertile islands of Orkney.
