New Gardens in Provence

Author(s): Louisa Jones

Gardening

Provence today is a paradise for garden makers; great designers from all over the world mingle with home-grown family gardeners and plant collectors. Few places in the world have seen as many new creations in recent years. All of today's major trends are represented: meadow and woodland gardening, minimalism, sculpted landscapes, stone wall terracing, the new land art. This book examines 30 of the best examples. Even the smallest - city office and restaurant courtyards, suburban plots, village forecourts - blend garden and landscape in creative ways. The largest features artist Andy Goldsworthy's work in a wild mountain setting. Most new gardens in Provence are sensitive to ecological issues such as water conservation and climate control and the final chapter explores partnership gardening, creations intended for public pleasure.
