A Sunday in Ville d'Avray

Author(s): Dominique Barbéris

General Fiction

'This atmospheric novel plunges us into the folds of our own emotions thanks to a richly evocative style. It has the troubling melancholy of Modiano's novels and the charm of Rohmer's films.' - Gael

It's a Sunday in early September and a woman is going to visit her sister in the suburbs outside Paris. She remembers their childhood, when they had 'tender hearts and lots of imagination' and a shared infatuation with Mr Rochester. They reminisce about their past and Claire Marie tells her sister about an encounter that took place over ten years earlier.

Set against the backdrop of the Corot ponds, Fausses-Reposes forest, and the footbridge above the Sevres-Ville-d'Avray station, this haunting novel explores half-shared truths and desires that can never be fully expressed.

Matilda Bookshop Review

This is an elegant and nostalgic portrayal of a Sunday afternoon in the leafy outskirts of Paris. Through the subtle observations of her protagonists, Barbéris captures delicate sensory details that evoke the character of this suburban setting. A pervading sense of melancholy is conveyed through the ephemeral presence of trains, light, and water, as two sisters reflect on preoccupations and tensions of their past and present. Fans of Jhumpa Lahiri's Whereabouts and Jessica Au’s Cold Enough for Snow will appreciate this atmospheric, contemplative work. Georgia
